birthdays birthdays birthdays!

Life's been busy.  And I haven't been good at photographing it. Except for birthdays....birthdays always warrant a photo or two....

For our roommate T's birthday, we hosted a classy cocktails and hors d'oeurves party.  Since T is a whiskey lover, we incorporated some whiskey and scotch into his birthday "cake" (which was actually little cake balls - to fit in with the hors d'oeurves theme).

housemates!!
A friend of ours had a surprise birthday party last weekend - her friends essentially re-created a different bar in town (typically known for it's after hours happenings) in one of the low key bars that we frequent.  I'm not going to lie, I was a non-believer at first, but it ended up being a great time!

the incredible cake - a brai! including edible non-meat "meat"
who doesn't love glowing in the dark?
What?  I can't hear you!

instead of dressing as hookers, we decided to go as parking attendants....complete with glow sticks
i helped you park your car, now give me some money
really...money, please?
Finally, today it was little M's birthday.  She's a whopping 5 years old today.  Still top of her class and still smiling that million dollar smile!

bday gal in the front (with her new dress - we took a trip to the tailor together and got the same ones made last year!)

best feeling in the world...

It's not fair that I only share doom and gloom stories about petrol (although, admittedly, that's usually all there is to share).  The Malawian Government recently got a loan from the Indian Government that should supply the country with fuel for 3 months.....3 months, assuming people consume at a regular pace and don't stockpile like crazy (stockpiling in the middle of a fuel crisis?  Noooooo, who would do that?).

Prior to my move to Malawi, I would never have categorized a full tank of gas as one of the best feelings in the world (I don't even think it would have cracked my list of the top100 best feelings in the world).  However, given that I can count on one hand the number of times I've gotten gas at a pump in the last 5 months, I am pleased to share with you the following photo taken last night....
For the last several weeks petrol has been plentiful - with very short (or even non-existent) queues!  However, the queues have recently returned (on a small scale) so I have a feeling I should savor this moment as I'm not sure when it'll happen again....

Back to Cape Mac

Just about one year ago, I made my first trip to the lake.  How I lasted 4 months in Malawi without a trip to the lake still baffles me!  Thanks to E&O, I became a changed woman!!

Anyway, another friend is preparing to pack up and leave Malawi so she organized a crazy big trip to the lake with the help of her friend and roommate.  Approximately 40 people piled into two buses and left town Friday afternoon for a fun filled weekend at Cape Mac, one of my favorite parts of Lake Malawi.  We stayed in several different cottages right near each other which made for a really fun group outing!  Big thanks to Malawian Style for making it happen...and for bringing the brand new speed boat which allowed for water sports galore!
Doesn't get much nicer....

no, this is not photo-shopped....this is actually what it looked like!
time for a banana boat (or hot dog boat?) ride
not surprisingly, we crashed pretty quickly
although we felt banged up (we knocked heads, got kicked, even bit lips), we hopped back on for another go
which didn't end much better....
then the guys had a go - I really don't know why, but this one reminds me of the jamaican bobsled team from cool runnings....
awesome tumble...
time for some tubing action!
hold on tight!  nearly overboard!
airtime!
getting some much needed vitamin D with my safari buddies
B, showing some skill on water skis
my turn on the tube...
a really funny facial expression....
i survived!
but was totally exhausted!
B getting some huge air!
O, mentally preparing for a go
well done, O!
E's turn...
this captures the exact moment in which E got severe whiplash......poor thing
Now for the main man himself
but even he couldn't survive the vicious tube!!
bliss.....
Another amazing get away.... it's really hard to believe that we can work SO incredibly hard during the week (I realize that from my photos you've probably forgotten I actually do have a day job!?!) and then get away to someplace so magical in a matter of hours on the weekend.  It's times like these that make it difficult to think about ever leaving (don't worry Mom and Dad, I'm sure magical lake weekends will lose their charm eventually.....maybe......or maybe the never ending fuel queues and forex shortages will eventually outweigh said lake trips?) :-)

Off to Naivasha I go!

It's no secret that this trip was questionable after the events that had taken place earlier in the week.  However, I recovered in the blink of an eye and hopped on a plane the very next day to go meet up with my team in Kenya.  Admittedly, I could have used one more day to rest, but I was so excited to see them that I really couldn't think of anything other than getting to Kenya!

I can't remember where this came from, but many days this is exactly how i feel about my team!
You see, my team is spread out across Africa and the US.  We spend most days working together via email and skype and we've only had the luxury to spend time together in person a handful of times (seriously, one of my closest friends, M, and I have only been in the same place at the same time 4 times....5 including Kenya)!!

So....I landed in Nairobi and had to spend the night there before heading to Naivasha early the next morning .... these photos are going to suggest that the meeting was all play and no work... but in actuality, we got a lot done!!
Passing through the Great Rift Valley en route to Naivasha
Some of the residents at Sopa Lodge
silly hairy looking monkey
Yeah, I have a thing for baby animals....

that monkey is about to attack R...true or false?
that monkey is about to attack M...true or false?
our huts (4 rooms per hut)....we needed escorts to get to them at night since the animals just roam around freely
like these guys who were hanging out near the huts
and now, for a Friday afternoon boat ride on Lake Naivasha!
skype buddies AND real friends!
the bday gal at the front of the boat!
I think I could probably handle more Friday afternoons like this.....
wave hello
yell hello!
and beware of hippos...
pretty M....
check out the hippo on the far right....so content sun bathing!!
baby buffalo trudging through the water...
if you look closely you can see a LONG line of drool coming from this giraffe's mouth (and blowing in the wind)!
silhouette photo, compliments of my boss!

On the last day, several of us stuck around to take advantage of being in each other's company in a beautiful part of the world.  We headed to Hell's Gate for a mini safari (20 min) and a hike down to a gorge (to "The Devil's Bedroom" and "The Point of No Return").  It was a perfect way to wrap up our time in Naivasha before heading back to Nairobi and, eventually, home.

our guide had to physically guide us down some of the crevices and steep areas

who knew it could feel so nice?!
nice enough to start a water fight!

BABY PUMBA!?!

And finally, it worked out perfectly to meet up with a friend of mine from grad school.  R and I were among a small group of people who took a course on the humanitarian/development sector and we've kept in touch off and on since we graduated.  He now lives in Nairobi and he managed to get a small group together to meet up with us to enjoy some tapas, live music, and mojitos (can't get those in Lilongwe)!

After a rough start to the week, this trip was a welcomed change - it was a lot of work, but it was also a fair amount of play...and more important some quality face time with some of my favorite people!!!

***For those of you who are curious, most of these photos were taken with my new Tamron 18-270mm lens .... which I have fallen completely in love with.  No more switching lenses for me!!!
