People always ask what there is to do in Lilongwe. The answer is, not a ton. Go to the lake (although not actually IN Lilongwe), go for a hike (although not actually IN Lilongwe), go out for a few drinks (ok, this can definitely be done in Lilongwe). That's not to say Lilongwe isn't fun, it is, there's just not a huge variety of things to do, considering it's a capital city!
I'm not really sure of the history behind it, but The Shack is the Wednesday night bar. There are two nice beach volleyball courts outside and every Wednesday they have a league that plays. So, naturally, it seems to be where people gather for a mid week drink and some friendly competition.
I've been playing on a team for the past few months and it's a great excuse to leave the office at a reasonable hour and exert some energy on something other than my computer. Last season we landed square in the middle of the C league (the lowest of the 3 leagues) but this season, 2 games in, we are right on top! We'll see how long that lasts :-)
A few weekends ago a bunch of us got together to play and one of our friends happened to bring her nice camera. The result? Action shots! Watch out Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh!
